Dear Self,

Everything you ever wanted is learning how to draw it out of yourself because you are that powerful
— Unknown

I challenge everyone reading this to write yourself a letter. In one year’s time reflect back and read your letter and see if you exist in that same mindset. Have things gotten better?, worse?, have you grown as a person?, reached your goals? Do not filter yourself or worry about what you are writing. It is a letter to yourself about yourself. Talk about what has happened to you these past several months, your hopes, dreams, fears for the future. How you are truly feeling and not the mask you put on in front of other people.

Here is why it matters so much…

  • It is emotionally safe: Only you will be reading what you wrote a year from now. It allows you to truly get your thoughts on paper with no filters or judgement. When you write freely things you may have bottled up come to the forefront and you can observe and respect those feelings and face the truth.

  • Can make you more compassionate to yourself: Sometimes we are our biggest critics and hardest on ourselves. Sometimes something small seems like such a big deal in the moment but when you self reflect you realize it wasn’t and you were more in your head. If you can identify in yourself your triggers then you can be more self aware

  • It helps your grieve and transition: Letters to yourself especially during life changing moments can help you. You truly grasp what you are feeling, allowing yourself to go through the motions and reflect back on how you handled and survived the situation you were placed in when you read your thoughts you had.

So take some time and write your future self a letter. Give yourself a real opportunity to see how far you had come in a year. What you achieved, over came and survived and give yourself a chance to be proud of yourself.

I think everyone should take the path to self improvement and becoming a better version of themselves. Why wouldn’t you want to?

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better
